Nearly every denim jacket is a variation on one 1960s template, and what separates them is how far each one strays. The trucker keeps the pointed chest-pocket flaps, the V-seams running down either side of the button placket and the waist tabs that pull the hem in. Earlier one- and two-pocket cuts sit boxier through the body, pleated rather than seamed. From there the shape stretches: cropped and shrunken fits, oversized drop-shoulder cuts, longer chore lengths, and hooded or sherpa-collared versions for cold weather.

Denim weight sets the character — lighter twills move immediately, heavier ones hold their shape and break in over months. Rigid and raw finishes start dark and fade to the wearer; stonewashed, acid and bleach treatments arrive with that work already done. Distressing, patchwork, painted panels and corduroy or blanket linings fill the rest.

What is the difference between a Type II and a Type III denim jacket?

The Type II, made from 1953 until 1962, is the boxier one: two flapped chest pockets and pleats running down either side of the button placket, over a fuller, longer body. The Type III, introduced in 1962 and later nicknamed the trucker, dropped the pleats for V-shaped seams that taper the body toward the waist, and cut the jacket both slimmer and shorter. Both carry pointed pocket flaps, so length and the pleat-versus-seam front are the tells. Almost every modern denim jacket descends from the Type III.

Should you size up in a denim jacket?

Only if you plan to layer. Denim jackets are cut close by design, and unwashed rigid denim gives roughly half a size across the chest as it breaks in, so your usual size normally works over a t-shirt. Go up one if you want it over a hoodie or sweatshirt, or if you want a boxy, dropped-shoulder line. Check the shoulder seam first: that is the one measurement a jacket cannot grow into.
