The Type II, made from 1953 until 1962, is the boxier one: two flapped chest pockets and pleats running down either side of the button placket, over a fuller, longer body. The Type III, introduced in 1962 and later nicknamed the trucker, dropped the pleats for V-shaped seams that taper the body toward the waist, and cut the jacket both slimmer and shorter. Both carry pointed pocket flaps, so length and the pleat-versus-seam front are the tells. Almost every modern denim jacket descends from the Type III.

Denim jackets are cut close by design, and unwashed rigid denim gives roughly half a size across the chest as it breaks in, so your usual size normally works over a t-shirt. Go up one if you want it over a hoodie or sweatshirt, or if you want a boxy, dropped-shoulder line. Check the shoulder seam first: that is the one measurement a jacket cannot grow into.
