Men's Bomber Jackets

The MA-1 is a US military flight jacket introduced in the 1950s, cut from nylon rather than the leather of the earlier A-2, because jet cockpits were pressurised and heated and crews needed something lighter. Its markers are a knitted collar, cuffs and hem, a zip utility pocket on the left sleeve, and a reversible bright orange lining meant to be worn outward as a distress signal. Almost every modern nylon bomber is a variation on it.

Both stop at the waist, but the collar and the cloth differ. A bomber has a ribbed knit collar, cuffs and hem, and blouses out above the waist. A Harrington has a proper turned-down shirt collar with a button or press-stud tab at the throat, a flatter body cut from cotton or a poly-cotton blend, and often a tartan lining and a pointed rain yoke across the back. Bombers read sportier; Harringtons sit nearer a shirt jacket.
