Fill power measures loft: how many cubic inches one ounce of down expands to fill in a lab test. Higher-fill-power down traps more air for its weight, so it gives more warmth per gram. Roughly, 550 to 650 is serviceable for everyday cold, 700 to 800 is genuinely good, and 850 and up sits at the top end. On its own it does not tell you how warm a jacket is, because a piece stuffed with plenty of low-grade down can beat one holding a little high-loft fill.

A down jacket insulates: it traps warm air inside baffles of down and keeps your own heat next to you, and a synthetic-filled jacket works the same way with a man-made fibre. A shell insulates nothing at all — its job is to block wind and rain, which is why it feels cold and thin when you first put it on. Shells are sized to go over a mid-layer. Some jackets do both, building insulation into a weatherproof outer, at the cost of being able to separate the two.
