How much structure sits inside the shoulder is what separates one blazer from another. A fully canvassed chest holds its shape and moulds to the wearer over years; a half-canvas takes the same approach through the upper body only, and an unstructured blazer drops the padding altogether so the fabric falls straight from the shoulder — softer, lighter, and closer to a shirt in feel.

The front does the rest of the work. Single-breasted styles with two buttons and notch lapels stay the most versatile, while double-breasted cuts with peak lapels close deeper and read more formal. Fabric decides the season: worsted wool and hopsack all year, flannel and tweed through winter, linen, cotton and blends when the weight has to come down. Patch pockets, functioning cuffs and a single or double vent set the character.
