Men's Leather Jackets

Which hide a jacket is cut from changes how it feels on day one and how it looks in ten years. Lambskin is light and supple straight away; calfskin holds a cleaner line; cowhide and horsehide start heavy and stiff before moulding to the shoulders that wear them. Beyond the leather itself, the shapes divide by closure and length — asymmetric riders, straight-zip bombers and blousons, shirt jackets that button through, and longer car coats and trenches cut from hide rather than cloth.

Suede and nubuck take a napped finish that reads softer but marks more easily than smooth grain. Aniline and semi-aniline dyes let the grain show and patinate with wear, whereas pigmented finishes sit more uniformly and shrug off scuffing. Waxed pull-up leathers go the other way again, lightening wherever the hide bends and darkening back as the wax is worked in. Linings run from quilted to shearling, cuffs close with zips or snaps, and hardware is finished anywhere from polished nickel to blackened steel.

What is the difference between lambskin and calfskin leather?

Lambskin is thinner, lighter and noticeably softer, so it drapes immediately and feels supple from the first wear, but it scuffs and scratches more easily and will not take decades of hard use. Calfskin is denser and firmer with a tighter, finer grain, so it holds a cleaner line, resists marking and lasts far longer, in exchange for more weight and a stiffer break-in. Cowhide and horsehide are heavier again and built to be worn hard.

How often should you condition a leather jacket?

Once or twice a year suits most smooth leathers, and more only if the hide looks dry or feels stiff. Wipe it clean, work a thin coat of conditioner in with a soft cloth, let it absorb for a few hours, then buff off the excess — over-conditioning clogs the grain and darkens the leather permanently. Suede and nubuck want a brush and a protector spray instead, never cream. Store it on a wide wooden hanger, never sealed in plastic.
