Lambskin is thinner, lighter and noticeably softer, so it drapes immediately and feels supple from the first wear, but it scuffs and scratches more easily and will not take decades of hard use. Calfskin is denser and firmer with a tighter, finer grain, so it holds a cleaner line, resists marking and lasts far longer, in exchange for more weight and a stiffer break-in. Cowhide and horsehide are heavier again and built to be worn hard.

Once or twice a year suits most smooth leathers, and more only if the hide looks dry or feels stiff. Wipe it clean, work a thin coat of conditioner in with a soft cloth, let it absorb for a few hours, then buff off the excess — over-conditioning clogs the grain and darkens the leather permanently. Suede and nubuck want a brush and a protector spray instead, never cream. Store it on a wide wooden hanger, never sealed in plastic.
