Gauge, written as GG, is the number of needles per inch on the knitting machine, so a lower number means a chunkier knit. Roughly speaking, 3GG to 5GG is heavyweight and bulky, worn as an outer layer; 7GG is a mid-weight that holds its own shape; 12GG and finer is a lightweight, smooth fabric that layers under a coat or blazer without adding bulk, and is the usual standard for fine merino and cashmere.

Pills are short surface fibres rubbed loose by friction, so they appear at the underarm, the cuff and wherever a bag strap sits, and they are heaviest in the first few wears. Rest a sweater 24 hours between wears so the fibres recover, and fold rather than hang it. Wash by hand or on a wool cycle at 30C, then dry flat. Remove existing pills with a cashmere comb or a pumice-style stone, working in one direction.
