WOMEN'S
Maison Margiela
The split toe does its work before anything else in the outfit gets a chance. Tabi footwear runs right through the womenswear — slingback sandals, chunky-heeled pumps, flat ballerinas, crinkled and painted finishes — and the one shape holds all of them together whatever the heel. Very little else in a wardrobe reads quite like it from the front.
Clothing takes the same idea into cloth. Knits arrive spliced from mismatched panels; shirt dresses run semi-sheer or poplin-crisp with the construction left legible; slip dresses carry lace at the edge rather than as applied trim. Denim is regenerated rather than smoothed over, and tailoring in poly-wool keeps the line dry and flat. Colour stays largely out of it, so shape and finish carry the argument.
