Sacai

Volume is the argument in Sacai womenswear, and it is always made twice. A piece begins as one familiar thing and turns into another partway down: a knit that becomes a shirtdress below the waist, a trench that releases into pleats at the back, a cardigan spliced to a length of technical nylon. Nothing is decorative about it, because the second garment is structural and changes how the whole thing hangs.

In the women's clothing it reads as pleated skirts flaring from a woven yoke, dresses layered from two fabrics that never quite settle, tailoring cut through with drawstrings and utility panels, and outerwear built on the bomber. Fine-gauge knitwear does the quieter work, paired against organza, poplin or nylon so the contrast registers at a distance. Sizing runs numerically, and each shape is drafted to sit differently.

Most are cut with deliberate asymmetry, fitted through the waist or shoulder and then released into pleats, panels or a second fabric that adds width lower down. Because the hem is often built from a different cloth than the body, the drape changes as you move. Numeric sizing applies, so a 1 sits near a US 6 and a 2 near a US 8. Go by the flat measurements at the narrowest point rather than the fullest.

How should Sacai knitwear be cared for?

Treat the piece by its most delicate component rather than its main one. A hybrid knit often carries nylon, organza or poplin panels stitched to a wool or cotton body, and those layers respond differently to heat and water. Cool hand washing or professional cleaning suits most of them. Keep the iron away from technical panels and pleats, and store folded rather than hung so the heavier fabric does not pull the knit out of shape.
