Poplin is a plain over-under weave in fine yarn, making it smooth, light and the crispest of the three, though it creases readily. Twill weaves on a diagonal, which you can see close up, and is heavier, softer, more fluid and much better at shrugging off wrinkles. Oxford uses a basketweave with thicker yarn, giving a visible texture and a slightly rougher hand that is very durable and reads as the most casual of the three.

The shoulder seam should end where your own shoulder ends, because that is the one measurement a tailor cannot easily change. At the bust, the placket should lie flat with no strain lines pulling sideways from the buttons; if it gapes there, the shirt is too small regardless of how the waist feels. Buy for the shoulder and bust, then have the waist and sleeve length taken in, which is quick and inexpensive work.
