The hem. Traditional sweatpants finish with an open, straight leg that falls over the shoe, or with a light elastic that barely gathers. Joggers close into a ribbed or elasticated cuff that sits above the ankle and holds a tapered shape through the calf. Joggers are usually cut narrower through the thigh to suit that taper, while open-hem sweatpants are cut fuller and read much closer to a casual trouser.

Through the seat, the fabric should follow the shape without pulling flat and taut across it, and without bagging into folds under the waistband. At the fullest part of the thigh you should be able to pinch about an inch of fabric, enough to move without the leg swinging. The crotch seam should sit close without pulling when you squat, and the waistband should stay up without the drawcord fully tightened; if you rely on the cord to keep them on, the size is too big. The cuff should rest at or just above the ankle bone, not halfway up the calf.
