Dress trousers are usually wool, with a stiffened waistband and inner curtain, a front lined to the knee and a pressed crease designed to stay in. The wool version hangs straighter and holds its shape; the cotton one is more forgiving and washes at home. Rise is the other giveaway, as dress trousers sit higher.

There are two waist measurements and they rarely match. Your body waist is taken with a tape around your natural waistline, just above the hip bones, held level and snug without compressing. The garment waist is taken flat across the top of the waistband and doubled. Compare like with like: take a pair that fits, measure the waistband flat, double it, and shop to that figure. Sizing varies, so a labelled 32 can measure anywhere from 32 to 34 inches.
