Straight cut describes the leg line: the same width from knee to hem, with no taper and no flare. Regular fit describes the room through the seat and thigh, which is fuller than slim and closer than relaxed. The two often appear together, but not always. A slim-straight is cut close above the knee and still runs straight below it, while a relaxed straight leaves more room at the top with the same unchanging leg.

The reliable method uses a pair you already like. Lay them flat, smooth the legs, then measure along the inside seam from the crotch seam down to the hem and round to the nearest half inch. To measure your body instead, stand against a wall in bare feet, hold a book level between your legs and mark the wall at its top edge, then measure from that mark to the floor. That figure is your full inseam; take an inch or so off it if you want the hem to sit clear of the shoe.
