Wrap styles cross one front panel over the other and are held by a self-belt, so how open the neckline sits depends on how far that panel is carried across.

Weight decides where each one lives. Fine silk and viscose versions layer over slip dresses and swimwear in warm weather, while felted wool, heavy knits and blanket-weight wraps stand in for a coat. Printed silk, devoré, embroidery and fringed edges sit at the decorative end, with plain crepe, jersey and brushed wool keeping it quiet.

What is the difference between a kimono jacket and a wrap coat?

A kimono cut hangs straight from a wide, dropped shoulder with a loose sleeve and an open front. It has no closure of its own, so it is worn hanging free or held with a separate belt. A wrap coat carries one front panel across the other and is secured by an attached self-belt, usually with an inner tie anchoring the under-panel, which is what creates the diagonal neckline and the defined waist. The kimono is a layer; the wrap closes.

How do you tie a wrap belt so it stays put?

Start with the inner tie if the coat has one, because it anchors the under-panel so the outer one does not slide open as you walk. Then set the outer belt on the natural waist, hold the overlap at the depth you want, and knot it there. Most wrap coats are cut to tie at the side seam, where the belt is threaded through the waist; only a loose sash can be carried round the back and tied at the front. Either way, keep the knot flat and on the natural waist, since a bulky bow up at the ribs shortens the torso.
