Fill power measures the loft of the down: one ounce of 700 fill power down expands to fill about 700 cubic inches. A higher number means the down traps more air per gram, so the coat is warmer for its weight, not automatically warmer overall. Fill weight, the actual amount of down inside, decides total warmth. A 600 fill parka packed generously will beat an 800 fill one with very little in it, so read both figures together.

Use a front-loading machine with no central agitator, a gentle cold cycle and a down-specific detergent rather than ordinary liquid, which strips the natural oils. Rinse twice to clear all the soap. Then tumble dry on low with two or three clean tennis balls for several hours, pausing every 20 minutes to break up clumps by hand, because down that dries compressed stays flat and loses its insulating loft.
