Women's Raincoats

Waterproof and water-resistant are not the same claim. A hydrostatic head rating in millimetres describes how much water pressure the fabric holds before it wets through: around 5,000mm handles ordinary rain, while 10,000mm and above copes with a long, heavy soaking. Seams matter just as much, because needle holes leak. Fully taped seams seal every stitch line, while critically taped versions cover only the shoulders, hood and pockets.

Styles run from packable lightweight shells and cropped anoraks to long storm coats cut to cover a skirt. Hoods may be fixed, roll-away or detachable, and storm flaps, drawcord hems, taped zips and vented backs keep water out while letting heat escape. Coated cottons, laminated technical nylon, rubberised finishes and clear or translucent panels each handle a downpour differently.

What does the mm waterproof rating on a raincoat mean?

It is a hydrostatic head figure: the height of a column of water the fabric will hold back before water seeps through, so a 10,000mm rating means a 10-metre column. As a rough guide, 1,500mm is the minimum usually needed to be called waterproof, 5,000mm handles ordinary rain and light wind, and 10,000mm and above copes with sustained heavy rain. Below those figures a coat is water-resistant, which is fine for a shower.

How do you restore water repellency on a rain jacket?

The DWR finish on the outer face wears off with dirt and abrasion, and you can see it happening when the fabric darkens and soaks instead of beading. Wash the coat first with a technical cleaner, never fabric softener, then reapply a wash-in or spray-on DWR treatment. Most finishes need heat to bond, so tumble dry on low or press with a warm iron under a cloth if the care label allows it.

Are DIHSAN's raincoats authentic?
