Women's Trench Coats

Every detail on a trench began as weatherproofing. The gun flap across the chest shed rain away from the buttons, the back yoke doubled the cloth where water collected, the belt cinched the waist against wind and the D-rings hung equipment. Double-breasted ten-button fronts remain the reference point, though single-breasted and wrap-front versions strip the row back for something quieter. Raglan sleeves keep the shoulder soft where set-in sleeves sharpen it.

Lengths run from cropped and mid-thigh through the classic below-knee cut to ankle-sweeping versions. Tightly woven cotton gabardine remains the traditional cloth, water-repellent and still breathable, while coated cottons, technical nylon and leather take the same shape somewhere else entirely. Removable linings, buckled cuff straps and throat latches are the details worth checking.

How should you tie a trench coat belt?

Skip the buckle for anything other than a formal look. Thread the belt through the loops, bring both ends round to the front and tie a loose knot slightly off centre, leaving the ends hanging rather than tucked away. Keep the knot at your natural waist. If you are wearing the coat open, fasten the belt at the back only, which holds the shape without pulling the front panels closed.

What is gabardine, and why is it used for trench coats?

Gabardine is a tightly woven twill, traditionally in tightly spun combed cotton, with a pronounced diagonal rib on the face and a smooth back. The yarn is proofed before it is woven and then packed densely enough that water runs off the surface instead of soaking in, while the weave still breathes, which is why it became the standard trench cloth. It also holds a crisp line, so collars, flaps and belts keep their shape.
