Check the shoulder seam sits at or just past your own shoulder point and that the sleeve covers the wrist bone with a cuff underneath. Shoulders are the one thing a tailor cannot easily fix.

The distinction is cloth weight and length. A topcoat is cut in lighter cloth, typically under about 20 ounces, and usually ends around the knee, which suits autumn and mild winters. An overcoat uses heavier cloth such as melton or a thick tweed and traditionally runs longer, below the knee, for real cold. In everyday use the two words are swapped freely, so judge by the fabric weight and the hem rather than the name.
