Gauge counts the number of needles per inch on the knitting machine, so it describes how fine or chunky the stitch is. A 12 or 14 gauge knit is fine and flat, and layers under a jacket without bulk. Around 7 gauge you get a mid-weight knit that works on its own over a shirt. Anything at 5 gauge or coarser is chunky knitwear with visible stitches, closer to outerwear in warmth and weight.

Pilling comes from friction on short loose fibres, so it peaks in the first few wears and then slows. Reduce it by rotating knits rather than wearing one two days running, washing inside out on a cool wool cycle in a mesh bag, and keeping rough bag straps and seat backs off the shoulders. When pills appear, shave them off with a fabric comb or a battery sweater shaver, since pulling them by hand takes good fibre too.
