Cold water, gentle cycle, inside out, and never the tumble dryer - heat is what makes a knit collar curl and a placket ripple. Wash it buttoned rather than open so the front holds its line. Dry it flat or over a broad hanger, smoothing the collar down while the fabric is still damp, and keep it away from radiators. A collar that has already curled can often be rescued with steam and a flat surface.

Both are knits, but they are built for different jobs. Pique is knitted with a fine raised texture that gives a polo its slight waffle grain, its breathability and enough body to keep a collar upright. French terry is looped on the inside and smooth on the face, heavier and softer, which is why it goes into hoodies and sweat-weight tees. Pique holds structure; French terry holds warmth.
