Wash at 30°C (86°F) or cooler on a gentle cycle. Cotton knits shrink because heat and agitation release the tension set into the yarn during knitting, which is why most of the movement shows in the first few washes. Turn it inside out, close any zips, and use a mild liquid detergent without fabric softener, which coats fleece and flattens the pile. Skip the tumble dryer, where that heat and tumbling are harshest. Reshape it while damp and dry it flat, away from direct heat.

Both start as the same knit; the difference is what happens to the reverse. French terry leaves small uncut loops on the inside, so it stays lighter, breathes well and works year-round, which makes it useful under a jacket. Brushed fleece runs those loops through rollers that cut and raise them into a soft nap, trapping air for noticeably more warmth. Fleece is warmer and heavier; terry holds its shape and shows less pilling.
