A slim cut with a high, narrow armhole pulls as soon as a second layer goes underneath, while a slim shirt cut straight through the body takes a thin cotton tee without dragging. Heavier cotton jersey usually relaxes slightly in width and shortens a little in length across the first few washes, which is why sizing down for a close fit can backfire.
