Women's Hooded Vests

A hooded vest is a layering decision before it is a garment: it warms the core and leaves the arms free, so what fits over and under it matters more than with any other top. Insulated styles pad the body panels with down or synthetic fill, and the hood is sometimes filled to match, sometimes left soft and lined. Fleece and knit-backed vests stay lighter and go under a coat. Sleeveless hoodies in loopback cotton do the same job in milder weather.

Closures divide the group. Full zips open the front completely, half-zips stop at the chest, and pullovers leave the front whole. The hood is a separate choice again — fixed, drawcorded or detachable at a zip. Lengths run cropped, hip and longline. Quilted and channel-stitched shells in nylon or recycled polyester shed light rain, brushed fleece stays soft against the skin, and ribbed or elasticated armholes close off draughts.

What is the difference between a vest, a gilet and a body warmer?

They describe the same sleeveless outer layer, and the word simply changes by market. Gilet is the French-derived term used across the UK and Europe, body warmer is a British term for the insulated version, and vest is the North American default. One caution: in British English a vest can also mean a sleeveless undershirt, so listings there often say gilet or body warmer to avoid the confusion entirely.

What size hooded vest should I buy to wear over a sweater?

Measure over the knit you actually plan to wear, not over a T-shirt. Take the fullest chest measurement with the sweater on, then compare it against the vest's flat chest measurement doubled, and look for roughly 5 to 10 cm of ease beyond that figure so the zip closes without pulling. Armhole depth and shoulder width matter more than the label. Between sizes, go up for layering and down for wear over a tee.
