A taper is defined by the gap between the widest part of the leg and the narrowest. Room across the hip and thigh, then a steady narrowing to a hem that sits close at the ankle; the wider that gap, the more pronounced the shape. A gentle taper reads like tailoring, while a carrot or barrel cut exaggerates it, pushing volume high and drawing it in sharply below the knee. Pleats at the waist are what create the room to begin with, with darts shaping it back in at the top.

Lengths are deliberately short, most falling at or just above the ankle bone so the narrow hem stays visible rather than stacking on the shoe. Wool and gabardine hold the line cleanly and take a pressed crease; crepe trades the sharp edge for drape; cotton twill and denim keep it casual; jersey and ponte give without losing the shape. Hems are finished plain, cuffed, elasticated or split at the outer seam.

What does tapered mean on a pair of pants?

It means the leg narrows steadily from the thigh toward the hem rather than holding one width. You can check it by laying the pant flat and measuring across the thigh, the knee and the hem: on a tapered cut each number is smaller than the one above it, often by two to three inches in total between knee and hem. A straight leg keeps knee and hem within about an inch.

Can tapered pants be shortened without ruining the shape?

Yes, but only a little. Because the leg narrows toward the hem, cutting length off means re-hemming at a wider point on the leg, so the opening gets looser and the taper reads blunted — past about an inch and a half it starts to look like a straight leg. Beyond that a tailor has to take in the inseam and side seam to redraw the taper evenly. Cuffed and elasticated hems have to be rebuilt rather than simply folded up.
