Ripstop is a weave, not a fibre. Thicker reinforcement yarns are woven in at regular intervals, close enough together to read as a faint grid when you hold the cloth up to the light. If the cloth is punctured, the tear runs only as far as the next reinforcement yarn and is checked there instead of opening up across the panel. That lets a fabric stay light and thin while resisting damage, which is why it appears in cotton, nylon and polyester utility pants.
