Women's Shirt Dresses
This is a shirt taken to dress length, and the button placket down the front is what does the work. Fastened to the throat, it reads sharp and covered; opened at the top two buttons, it softens; left open down the front, it becomes a layer worn over trousers or a swimsuit. The collar and cuffs carry the tailoring, while the waist changes with the shape — seamed into the cut on some, set by a belt on others, left alone on the rest.
Cuts run from crisp, straight bodies with a dropped shoulder, through waisted fit-and-flare shapes, to oversized belted versions worn loose, at lengths from mini through midi to maxi. Cotton poplin and oxford hold a collar upright, denim gives the shape real weight while chambray keeps the same look at shirt weight, and silk, crepe and viscose let the front fall softer — the trade being that fluid cloth is likelier to gape between buttons at the bust. Linen sits between the two, dry and crisp rather than fluid, and creases as it goes.
