An accessory is defined by the thing it is measured against — a waist, a hand, a shoulder, the bridge of a nose. Belts run from narrow leather straps threaded through denim loops to wide waist-cinching shapes worn over a coat. Scarves scale the same way, from small silk twill squares knotted at the throat to cashmere stoles sized to cover the shoulders, and gloves are cut close to the hand in leather, suede or knit, with linings that decide how warm they actually are.

Small leather goods follow their contents instead of the body: card holders, zip wallets, pouches and key cases. Sunglasses and hats stand apart again, chosen on frame shape and brim. Silk, cashmere, calf leather, acetate and plated metal do most of the work, with hardware and stitching finished to match the pieces they are worn with.
