Crown depth is what makes one beanie sit tight to the head and another slide back off it. Shallow-crowned styles finish above the ear and hug the skull. A deeper crown gives the slouch that gathers at the back, and the deepest cuts fold over on themselves entirely. The hem follows from that, landing at mid-forehead, at the brow or over the ear.

Turn-up cuffs double the knit at the band for a firmer grip; raw and rolled edges keep the line clean. Fine-gauge rib pulls in close, chunky cable and waffle knits hold their volume, and pom-pom versions add weight at the crown. Merino and lambswool run soft and warm, cashmere finer still, while cotton and viscose blends carry into milder weather. Branding, where there is any, is a logo patch, embroidery or a woven tab at the cuff.
