Static comes from wool or acrylic rubbing against dry hair. A satin or silk-lined beanie removes most of it, because satin has almost no grip on the hair cuticle, and a silk scarf tied underneath does the same job on an unlined hat. Otherwise a light leave-in conditioner or a few drops of oil through the lengths adds enough moisture to stop the charge building. Anti-static spray on the inside of the hat also works.

Wool and cashmere can usually be brought back. Soak the hat in lukewarm water with a little wool wash for ten minutes, press the water out without wringing, then reshape it over a bowl or a balled towel roughly the size of your head and leave it to dry fully. Heat is the risk here, as a hot wash or a tumble dryer will felt it and shrink it too far. Acrylic will not recover, because the fibre has no memory.
