They describe the same shape, and in Canada the word touque is used for all of these hats. Where people do draw a line, a touque means the heavier winter version, with a thicker knit, a deeper crown, often a lining or a turn-up cuff and frequently a pom-pom, while beanie tends to mean the lighter, thinner cap worn year-round for style more than for cold. Toque, tuque and touque are all used for the same word.

Cashmere is finer and warmer gram for gram, but merino usually makes the better winter hat in practice. Merino fibres are more elastic and considerably more durable, they keep insulating when damp from snow or sweat, and they resist odour. Cashmere pills faster and loses shape at the band with regular wear. A dense merino or lambswool touque will outperform a thin cashmere one in real cold, while cashmere earns its place in milder weather.
