The names describe coverage. A classic brief sits at or just below the navel, with full rear coverage and a fuller cut through the leg. A bikini sits on the hip with narrower sides and slightly less at the back. A hipster sits lowest of the three, with straight sides and a wider band across the hip. A thong keeps a front panel but reduces the back to a narrow strip, so there is almost nothing to show under close fabric.

The gusset is the small separate panel sewn into the crotch, and it is usually cotton even when the rest of the garment is lace or synthetic. Cotton absorbs moisture into the fibre and breathes, so it does not hold humidity against the skin the way polyester or nylon does — those fibres barely absorb at all, which is why the moisture stays on the surface. The panel is often left undyed as well, to keep dye away from sensitive skin. Wash cotton underwear warm, around 40C, and skip fabric softener, which coats the fibres and cuts that absorbency.
