Standard lengths run in bands. A choker sits at 14 to 16 inches, at the base of the throat. Princess, 17 to 19 inches, falls on or just below the collarbone and suits most pendants. Matinee runs 20 to 24 inches and lands on the chest, which works over knitwear and higher necklines. Opera covers everything longer up to 36 inches and can be worn full length or doubled; rope is longer still, made to be knotted or wrapped. To check, measure a chain you already wear laid flat, clasp included.

All three describe a gold layer over a base metal, and the difference is how much gold and how it is bonded. Plating is a thin electroplated coat, often well under one micron, so it wears through fastest at friction points. Vermeil is electroplated too, but the base must be sterling silver and the gold at least 10 karat and 2.5 microns thick. Gold-filled is mechanically bonded and by weight at least one twentieth gold, which makes it the most durable of the three.
