Women's Knee-Length Skirts

A hem that stops at the knee has nowhere to hide, so the cut above it carries the entire shape. Pencil skirts taper from hip to hem and keep everything close; A-line and flared cuts release from the waist and swing; straight skirts split the difference and fall clean. Pleating changes the arithmetic again, with knife pleats holding a vertical line, box pleats adding breadth across the hip and accordion pleats moving with every step.

Wraps, buttoned fronts and slits decide how much leg the skirt shows once it is in motion, while a high waist shifts the proportion above the hem rather than where the hem lands. Suiting wool and gabardine press to a sharp edge, denim and cotton twill hold their structure, and satin, crepe and leather each drape or stand in their own way. Knits follow the body most closely of all.

What is the difference between a pencil skirt and an A-line skirt?

A pencil skirt is cut narrow through the hip and tapers slightly toward the hem, so it follows the body closely and usually needs a vent or a slit to allow a full stride. An A-line skirt is narrowest at the waist and widest at the hem, flaring gradually as it drops, which gives room to walk without any opening. Pencil shapes read more formal and more fitted; A-line shapes are more forgiving across the hip and stomach.

How do you measure the length of a skirt?

Lay the skirt flat with the back facing up and measure straight down from the top of the waistband at the centre back to the lowest point of the hem. That figure is the length retailers quote. On the body, a knee-length skirt should finish within about an inch either side of the kneecap, which usually works out at around 23 to 25 inches (58.5 to 63.5 cm) for someone of average height. Compare that against your own waist-to-knee measurement.
