Women's Single Breasted Coats

A single-breasted coat has one row of buttons and the two front edges meet with only a small overlap. A double-breasted coat carries two rows and laps one front panel well across the other, adding a second layer of cloth over the chest. That makes double-breasted warmer and broader through the torso, where single-breasted is lighter, narrower at the front and easier to wear open without the panels flapping.

Lay the coat flat and measure from the shoulder seam along the outside of the arm to the cuff edge. A raglan sleeve has no shoulder seam at all, and on a dropped shoulder the seam sits down the arm rather than on the shoulder point, so on both measure instead from the centre back of the collar out to the cuff and compare that against the same measurement on yourself. As an outer layer the sleeve should cover the wrist bone and sit about half an inch past a jacket cuff underneath.
