Remove any fur or faux-fur trim first, then close every zip and wash the parka in a front-loading machine on a cool, gentle cycle using a down-specific detergent — ordinary liquid strips the natural oils that let down loft. Run an extra rinse. Tumble-dry on low with two or three clean tennis balls for two to three hours, pulling it out periodically to break up clumps by hand. It has to be bone dry through the baffles or the down will mildew.

Length and the hood. A parka is cut long, mid-thigh to knee, so it covers the hips and upper legs a hip-length coat leaves exposed, and its hood is fitted and lined to seal around the face rather than flap loose. Most also add a two-way zip so the hem can open for walking, drawcords at the waist and hem, and a windproof outer shell over down or synthetic insulation.
