Length and the weight of the cloth settle an overcoat before anything else does. Knee-length and below-knee cuts cover a suit jacket completely and hold their line through wind, while car coats and shorter topcoat lengths finish at mid-thigh and move better on foot. Single-breasted styles close on one row of buttons and sit closer to the body, usually under a notch or a narrow lapel; double-breasted and Ulster cuts overlap for a second layer of cloth across the chest, and belted wrap coats close with the belt alone.

Raglan sleeves run the seam from underarm to collar, softening the shoulder and leaving room to move over a jacket, while set-in sleeves hold a cleaner line. Wool and cashmere blends, dense melton and brushed alpaca carry the weight of a real winter coat; twill and gabardine run lighter for the shoulder seasons. Half and full linings, storm collars and hidden plackets finish them.

What is an Italian size 50 coat in US sizing?

Italian and European tailoring sizes run ten numbers above the US and UK chest size, so an IT 50 is a US 40, a 48 is a 38, a 52 is a 42 and a 54 is a 44. The Continental number is drawn from centimetres rather than inches: an IT 50 is drafted for roughly a 100 cm chest, wearing ease already included, so it describes the garment rather than your own chest measurement. Because an overcoat has to clear a suit jacket, read the maker's measurements before deciding whether to stay at your usual tailoring size or take the next one up.

What is the difference between an overcoat and a topcoat?

Weight and length. A topcoat is cut from lighter cloth and usually stops around mid-thigh, which makes it a spring and autumn layer worn over tailoring. An overcoat uses heavier wool, melton or a cashmere blend, runs to the knee or below, and is built for winter proper. The two words get used interchangeably, but the practical rule holds: if a coat is heavy and long, it is an overcoat.

Are DIHSAN's overcoats authentic?

Will I be charged duties on a DIHSAN coat order?

No. Duties are included on every DIHSAN order, and US orders include taxes as well.

Yes. Eligible overcoats can go back within 14 days of the ship date, for store credit rather than cash, and shipping charges are non-refundable. Items discounted 70% or more — plus swimwear, intimates, and limited-release styles at any discount — are final sale.
