Pieces are usually labelled on the Italian scale, with 38 near a US 2, 40 near a US 4 and 42 near a US 6, or as S to L, but those numbers understate the fit. Oversizing is a design decision here rather than a tolerance, so a 40 jacket or shirt can sit two sizes larger than the label suggests while a knit or a dress is cut close. Check the shoulder and chest measurements first.

What is a reworked shirt dress?

It is a shirt pattern re-proportioned into a dress. The collar, placket and cuffs stay where you expect them, while the body is widened, the hem dropped well past shirt length and the shoulder seam moved down the arm, so the reference stays obvious even though the garment is no longer a shirt. These are usually cut in cotton poplin or striped shirting and hang loose through the body, which makes the shoulder and total length measurements more useful than the size on the label.
