Men's Knee-Length Shorts

Knee-length shorts generally run a 9 to 11 inch inseam, measured from the crotch seam straight down the inside leg to the hem. On an average height of around 5'10", there is roughly a foot between the crotch and the top of the kneecap, so a 9 inch inseam finishes a couple of inches clear of the knee and 11 inches brings the hem to the top of it. Taller men should sit at the top of that range, or an inch beyond, to hold the same proportion; shorter men are better at the 9 inch end, since a longer hem cuts the leg low.

Aim for two to three inches of room around the thigh at its widest, enough to pinch a little fabric on each side without the leg looking full. The opening should sit clear of the leg where the hem lands so it hangs rather than grips; a tailored knee-length short usually measures 21 to 24 inches around the hem. If the leg flares out when you sit down, the cut is too wide rather than too long.
