Mostly the country you are standing in. Touque, also spelled tuque or toque, is the Canadian word for a knitted brimless cap, and beanie is the common American term for the same thing. In practice the two have drifted slightly apart: touque tends to mean the heavier, deeply cuffed winter knit, often with a pom-pom, while beanie gets used loosely for lighter everyday knits worn most of the year.

Hand wash in lukewarm water, around 30°C, with a wool or delicate detergent. Heat and agitation are what felt the fibres, not water itself. Press the suds through gently rather than rubbing or wringing, rinse at the same temperature, then roll it in a towel to take out the water and dry it flat, reshaped by hand. Never tumble dry. Lift any pilling with a knitwear comb rather than pulling at it.
