Silk does most of the work in the men's ties here: plain twill, the open weave of grenadine giving texture in place of pattern, jacquards working a design into the cloth, and printed, polka dot and striped regimental ties stating it outright. Wool, cashmere, linen and knitted ties with blunt square ends take the same knot somewhere less formal. Widths run skinny, slim and classic, with extra-long lengths cut for taller frames. Bow ties sit at the other end of the drawer, self-tie and pre-tied, in butterfly and batwing straight-end shapes, diamond-point tips, and black or midnight satin for black tie. Cloth weight and blade width separate one from another once the colour is settled.

How wide should a tie be?

Match the tie to the lapel. A classic width runs about 3.25 to 3.5 inches at the blade and suits a standard notch lapel; slim ties sit around 2.5 to 3 inches for a narrower suit; skinny ties go under 2.5 inches and read as deliberately modern rather than formal. Length matters as much: the tip should finish at the middle of the belt buckle, which is why extra-long ties exist for taller men and for bulkier knots.

How do you tie a bow tie?

It is a shoelace bow tied vertically. Set one end about an inch and a half longer, cross the long end over the short one and pull it up through the neck loop. Fold the short end into a bow shape and hold it flat against your collar. Drop the long end straight down over the centre, then fold it into a second bow and push that loop through the gap behind the first. Pull on both loops rather than the ends to tighten.
