Women's One-Piece Swimsuits

A one-piece is fitted along a single continuous line — over the shoulder, down the front, through the crotch and back up the spine — so torso length decides the fit before bust or hip measurements come into it at all. Maillots keep an uninterrupted front and full back, while scoop, square and plunge necklines change how much of that line stays visible. Open, cross-back and racerback constructions free the shoulders; a halter concentrates the load on the neck.

Cut-out, wrap-front and one-shoulder designs interrupt the torso without shortening it, and a high-leg opening lengthens the line of the leg where a straight cut runs level across the thigh. Shirred and ruched panels give a single size some range. Nylon-elastane knit with a lined front is standard, in smooth matte, ribbed and crinkle finishes, and removable cups let bust shaping be adjusted without changing how the rest of the suit fits.

How do you measure torso length for a one-piece swimsuit?

Run a soft tape from the top of one shoulder, down the front over the fullest part of the bust, between the legs, and back up to the same shoulder point. Keep it snug but not tight. That loop is your torso measurement, and it is what decides whether a suit digs into the shoulders or sags at the crotch. Long-torso versions typically add around 2 inches (5 cm) to a standard cut, which is enough to fix most pulling.

What does maillot mean, and how is it different from a monokini?

Maillot is the French word for a jersey or vest, and in swimwear it means a plain, uninterrupted one-piece with a full front and back and no cut-outs. It is the classic shape that has been worn since the 1920s. A monokini is also a one-piece, but sections are cut away at the sides or down the centre front and held together by narrow panels or rings. Both cover the torso; only one leaves it whole.
