Women's Bikini Sets

A set is two garments that have to fit independently, and the top is almost always the harder half. Triangle and slide styles adjust at the neck and back and cover a range of shapes; bandeau tops have no straps to correct the fit and rely entirely on the band; halters carry the weight on the neck. Underwire and balconette tops build that support into the garment and are usually sized like a bra, while moulded, bralette and other soft-cup shapes spread it across a wider band and run XS to XL instead.

Bottoms tilt the balance the other way. High-waisted, hipster and mid-rise cuts cover more; cheeky and high-leg cuts cover less, and a high leg raises where the opening sits on the hip. Tie-side fastenings adjust the fit at the hip rather than changing how much is covered. Prints, ribbed textures, crochet and cut-out constructions run through both halves, and a nylon-elastane knit with a lined front is the standard — elastane is the fibre that lets a piece recover its shape wear after wear.

How do bikini top sizes convert to bra sizes?

Underwire and balconette tops are usually sold in band-and-cup sizes and convert directly, so a 34C bra is a 34C top. Soft-cup styles — moulded, triangle, bandeau and bralette — come in XS to XL instead, mapping roughly as XS to a 30-32 band in A or B, S to 32B-34B, M to 34C-36B, and L to 36C-38B. Cup depth varies far more between brands than the band does, so check the band measurement first.

How should you wash swimwear so it lasts?

Chlorine, salt and sunscreen all attack elastane, and heat finishes the job. Rinse in cold fresh water as soon as you take a piece off, then hand wash in cool water with a mild detergent, pressing the water out rather than wringing. Dry flat in the shade, since a tumble dryer, a radiator and direct sun each cook the stretch out of the fibre. Alternating between two suits gives the elastane a day to recover between wears.
