Twenty to forty reads semi-opaque and still recognisably like hosiery. Full opacity generally begins around sixty to eighty denier, and above that the fabric behaves more like a fine knit, the extra thickness bringing some insulation with it as a side effect rather than as the point.

That figure maps directly onto European sizing: 52 millimetres is EU 52, roughly a US 6. Fingers swell through the day, so an evening measurement is the safer one, and a knuckle wider than the base of the finger takes the larger of two sizes.
