Inseam decides everything else about a pair of shorts, because where the hem lands sets the proportion and the rest follows. Knee-length cuts, roughly a nine to eleven inch inseam, finish at or just above the kneecap and read closest to a trouser, with flat-front tailored pairs alongside cargo, denim and drawstring versions. Mid-thigh shorts pull about four inches higher, around five to seven inches, where chino, jersey and swim-derived styles all live.

Shorter cuts stop well above that again, drafted close through the leg with a wide hem opening so the stride stays free. Cloth follows the length: cotton twill and denim hold a crease and a heavier drape, linen crumples by design, and French terry gives with the body. Waistbands are the last variable: belt loops and a button on tailored pairs, elastic and drawcord on everything softer.

How is the inseam on a pair of shorts measured?

Lay the shorts flat and measure from the crotch seam straight down the inside leg to the hem. That figure, not the waist, decides where the hem lands. On most men a nine inch inseam finishes at the top of the kneecap, seven inches sits mid-thigh, and five inches lands well above it. Height shifts all of this, so compare the number against a pair you already own rather than trusting the label alone.

What is the difference between chino shorts and cargo shorts?

Chino shorts are cut from a fine cotton twill with a flat front, slash pockets at the side and welt pockets behind, so the line stays close to the leg and takes a belt. Cargo shorts use a heavier twill or ripstop and add bellows pockets on the thigh, which stand proud of the cloth and carry weight. The chino reads as a shortened trouser; the cargo is a utility cut and usually sits looser through the hip.
