Terry is the mid-weight everyday choice; fleece is the cold-weather one, and at the same nominal weight it sits thicker and warmer, because the nap holds more air rather than more fibre.

Pilling comes from abrasion, so the aim is less friction. Turn them inside out before washing, use cold water on a gentle cycle, and wash them with other soft items rather than towels, denim or anything carrying zips. Skip fabric softener, which coats the fibres and leaves a residue that keeps loose ends standing proud of the surface, and tumble on low or air dry. Long-staple cotton and tighter knits pill less to begin with. When pills do appear, comb them out with a fabric comb or shave them off with a battery shaver instead of pulling them.
