Swim trunks have an elastic waistband with a drawcord, a short inseam of roughly five to seven inches, and usually a mesh liner inside. Board shorts run longer, past mid-thigh toward the knee, and use a flat fly with a lace closure so nothing bunches under a board. Square-cut styles keep a short, squared leg across the upper thigh; a brief cuts the leg away completely for a clean swimming line. Jammers take that same close fit down toward the knee, which is why lap swimmers reach for them.

Rinse in cool fresh water as soon as you are out. Chlorine and salt both attack elastane, and salt crystals abrade the fibres as the fabric dries. Hand wash in cool water with a mild detergent, never wring, and press the water out in a towel instead. Dry flat in the shade, since direct sun and a tumble dryer both break down elastic. Try not to sit in a wet suit on rough concrete or pool decking, which abrades the face of the fabric and pills it.
