What is EU 50 in US suit sizing?

EU and Italian suit sizes run ten numbers above US and UK sizing, so an EU 48 is a US 38, EU 50 a 40, EU 52 a 42, EU 54 a 44, EU 56 a 46 and EU 58 a 48. The US number refers to the chest measurement in inches, so a 40 is drafted for a 40-inch chest, and the drop sets the trouser waist, usually six inches less. Measure your chest at its fullest point over a shirt, then let the shoulder seam confirm the size rather than the label.

How should suit trousers fit?

They should sit on the waist and stay there without a belt doing the work, with room to slide a flat hand inside the waistband and no pulling across the seat or thigh. Judge the taper at the knee and the hem rather than at the ankle. Break is a matter of preference: none reads modern, a light single break is the safe middle, and anything deeper pools on the shoe. Buy for the seat, which is hardest to alter, and have waist and hem adjusted.
