A double breasted coat carries two rows and a wide overlap, adding a second layer of cloth across the chest. That extra layer holds warmth but reads heavier, and it hangs untidily when the coat is worn open. The single breasted cut stays neat either way and sits flatter under a strap.

Enough that a jacket or a heavy knit fits underneath without pulling at the shoulder seam or straining the fastening. Judge the shoulder first, because it is the one measurement a tailor cannot easily change; chest and waist can usually be taken in afterwards. Coats cut as overcoats already allow for a tailored jacket beneath. If yours will mostly go over a shirt alone, a size up will leave both sleeve and body long.
