Women's Flat Sandals
With no heel to speak of, a flat sandal lives or dies on where its straps fall. A single wide band across the vamp is the simplest hold; two or three thinner bands spread the same job and show more foot. Thong and toe-post styles anchor between the toes instead, gladiators run a ladder of straps up the ankle and calf, and fisherman sandals weave a closed cage over the toes. Ankle straps and slingbacks add a fastening at the back for anything worn over distance.
Footbeds range from a flat leather insole to a contoured cork bed with an arch and a raised toe bar. Smooth and grained calf softens with wear and takes the shape of the foot; suede feels warmer underfoot, raffia and woven leather breathe, and buckles and slide rings handle the adjustment while covered studs stay decorative.
