The anchor. A flip flop holds on with a Y-shaped toe post that passes between the big and second toe, so the sole stays with the foot through the whole step and makes that flicking sound as it slaps back. A slide has one open band over the instep and no toe post, so you push straight in and the foot grips by pressing down. Slides are easier on the toes and quicker on and off; flip flops stay on better when wet.

Snug across the band, with a little room at the ends. The band is the only strap holding the shoe on, so it should sit firm without pressing a line into your foot; if you have to curl your toes to keep the sandal on, it is too loose. Aim for about half a centimetre of footbed clear at the heel and toe, since a foot that overhangs either end wears down the edge of the sole. Many pairs come in whole sizes only, so if you fall between sizes, check the brand's own size guide before you choose.
