Wash and dry the two pieces together every single time, even when only one of them has been worn. Dye fades with each cycle, and pieces that go through different numbers of washes drift apart in shade until the match is visibly off. Use a cold cycle, turn both inside out, skip optical brighteners and fabric softener, and dry both the same way, because heat drives both fading and shrinkage.
