Size it to the layer underneath rather than to your shirt size. Worn over a mid-weight hoodie, a vest usually needs the chest measurement you would take in a jacket, or roughly two to four inches of room across the chest so the zip closes without pulling. The armholes should clear your sleeve seam without binding, and the hem should fall past the waistband of the layer beneath. If it will only ever go over a tee, stay with your normal size.

Down and synthetic-fill vests can usually be washed cold on a gentle cycle, but the drying matters more than the wash. Tumble dry on low with two or three clean dryer balls, which break up clumped fill and restore loft, and expect two or three full cycles before it is properly dry. Never wring a wet down vest, and skip fabric softener — it coats the fill and flattens the loft. Check the care label first.
